Understanding File Cuts
File cuts refer to the coarseness of the teeth. Lower numbers (e.g. cut 0) remove more material, while higher numbers (e.g. cut 4 or 6) give a finer finish. Here’s a quick reference:
Cut 00 – Coarse (41 teeth per inch)
Cut 2 – Medium (79 teeth per inch)
Cut 4 – Fine (117 teeth per inch)
Cut 6 – Extra Fine (173 teeth per inch)
Tip: Use coarser files for shaping, finer cuts for finishing. For delicate work, opt for a cut 4 or 6.
File Shapes & Their Uses
The shape of your file determines what it’s best suited for. Here's a breakdown of popular profiles:
Barrette – One-sided teeth, perfect for refining tight angles without damaging adjacent surfaces.
Half-Round – Ideal for inside and outside curves; a true all-rounder.
