Doming 101: Tools, Techniques & Top Tips

A goldsmith using a ball punch fot dapping

If you’re looking to refresh your jewellery range with eye-catching curves and perfect hemispheres, doming (or dapping) tools are the answer. A reliable block and punch set lets you transform a flat blank into a clean, uniform dome in minutes – ideal for pendants, bead caps, earrings, charm shells and more.

Whether you’re shaping sterling silver, brass or textured copper, you’ll find the right kit (and price point) below.

Doming 101 – Tips for Perfect Results

  1. Match the blank to the well. The metal must sit entirely in the recess; if it overhangs, drop to the next larger size.

  2. Use the right hammer. A chasing hammer or dead-blow mallet delivers a clean strike without scarring the punch head. Browse all hammers »

  3. Work soft metals first. Silver, brass or aluminium dome quickly. Harder alloys may need annealing between steps. Browse metals »

  4. Strike at a slight angle. Tilt the punch a touch and rotate between taps – you’ll gain more control and a rounder finish.

  5. Deepen the dome progressively. Move from a shallow well to smaller wells to achieve a high dome without thinning the edge.

  6. Stamp first, dome later. Texture or personalise the blank before shaping to preserve crisp details.
