Understanding File Cuts

File cuts refer to the coarseness of the teeth. Lower numbers (e.g. cut 0) remove more material, while higher numbers (e.g. cut 4 or 6) give a finer finish. Here’s a quick reference:

  • Cut 00 – Coarse (41 teeth per inch)

  • Cut 2 – Medium (79 teeth per inch)

  • Cut 4 – Fine (117 teeth per inch)

  • Cut 6 – Extra Fine (173 teeth per inch)

Tip: Use coarser files for shaping, finer cuts for finishing. For delicate work, opt for a cut 4 or 6.

File Shapes & Their Uses

The shape of your file determines what it’s best suited for. Here's a breakdown of popular profiles:

  • Barrette – One-sided teeth, perfect for refining tight angles without damaging adjacent surfaces.

  • Half-Round – Ideal for inside and outside curves; a true all-rounder.

  • Flat/Square Files – Great for flat surfaces and corners. The hand file has a safe edge for precision.

  • Three-Square (Triangular) – Excellent for filing prong seats and creating sharp internal angles.

  • Round – For enlarging holes or filing curves with control.

  • Knife – Best for acute angles and very narrow slots.

💡 Pro Tip: Don’t use the same file for every task – each shape is designed for a specific job.
